The next day we all headed back along the King River Road to visit an Aboriginal Cave Art site

Then finally 25km’s out along the corrugated dirt road we visited the Boab Prison Tree

The Savannah

This, if you can believe it, was a test shot for a panorama I wanted to take, mirroring an image idea I had in my mind
Isolated boab trees in a huge grassy plain with no other distracting trees or rocks. Silhouetted against the horizon and the setting sun.

A Perfect Setting
by Rodney Campbell on Aug.25, 2019, under Life, Photography
For a couple of days I’d been on the lookout for a perfect setting for an image I had pictured in my mind
There are an absolute abundance of boab tree’s up here in the Kimberley. Side note this actually came as a great surprise to me on my first trip up here. Before coming I expected that I’d see some but that they’d be a rare sight. How wrong I was – they are EVERYWHERE 🙂
However whilst there may be a lot of them they are mixed in with all the other tree’s, bushes and other things you find in the outdoors
I desperately wanted one or a few isolated trees in a huge grassy plain with no other distracting trees or rocks. Bonus points if this basically extended to the horizon with nothing distracting behind the tree(s)
Alas this was proving very difficult to find
I even contacted some other (commercial) photographers (whose images I’d seen) and asked if they’d mind sharing the location. Alas whilst a message was read it was ignored…
Boab Savannah
However – my parents joined me for a trip out along the King River Road (terrible corrugated thing BTW)
My plan was to come out here to shoot sunset images over the river and the tidal mud flats with the drone. And perhaps if I was lucky shoot some boabs with my full landscaping kit. We brought a packed dinner to have a picnic on location whilst I shot
When we got here however we found this!!! It was the perfect setting, boab savannah I was envisaging
My hope was twilight boab images were going to match my vision… we shall see…

Abstract Tidal
by Rodney Campbell on Aug.24, 2019, under Life, Photography
Before coming on this trip I’d done some aerial research (aka Google Maps, etc)
Wyndham was one of those places I’d made a special request to my parents to stay for some time (two nights). This was explicitly so I could photograph the amazing tidal mud flats in the area from above
This makes for amazing natural abstract art when shot from the air
Abstract Tidal I
For my wife who’s been asking “where are some top down drone images”… and there’s more and better to come…
