Into the Void

by on Dec.24, 2019, under Life, Photography

I hadn’t realised before coming here that you actually needed to book tickets online for a specific one hour entry timeslot. And you needed said online ticket to even enter the structure

So I jumped online (thankyou smartphones with a data plan) and booked a ticket. Tickets are free and are issued on a first come, first served basis. Thankfully I managed to grab one for a timeslot in a little over an hours time

I’ll know better now for when my wife wants to come and visit and I can book in advance 🙂

Since I had time to spare I went and got some lunch in the Hudson Yards shopping centre before coming back to climb the structure

The Vessel

by on Dec.23, 2019, under Life, Photography

This extraordinary centrepiece of Hudson Yards is a structure known as The Vessel. A massive spiral staircase, a soaring landmark meant to be climbed. This interactive artwork was imagined by British designer Thomas Heatherwick as a focal point where people can enjoy new perspectives of the city and one another from different heights, angles and vantage points

16 stories high it is comprised of 154 intricately interconnecting flights of stairs. Almost 2,500 individual steps and 80 landings. The vertical climb offers remarkable views of the city, the river and beyond

This structure only opened earlier this year so it wasn’t here last time we were in New York. My wife was at a client meeting so I knew we’d be coming back here at a later stage for her to visit

I was visiting on a nice overcast day which was good for photos. I also got to make good use of my very handy insanely ultrawide 14mm focal length of the 14-30mm Z series lens

Heading down to Hudson Yards – a real estate development in the Chelsea and Hudson Yards neighbourhoods of Manhattan

There’s a huge shopping centre here including the upmarket Neiman Marcus store

I wasn’t visiting Hudson Yards for the shopping however… I was here to take a look at this enormous structure called The Vessel

Ground Zero

We were in New York!

Last time we’d been in New York we stayed in an apartment on the upper east side

This time we decided to try staying much further down Manhattan island closer to Wall St

My wife was visiting the offices of her company here in the US (which was very close to here) this morning and a client meeting in midtown later today so I spent the morning wandering

First stop the nearby 9/11 memorial and surrounds
