The Other Realm
by Rodney Campbell on Nov.12, 2021, under Photography
One of my favourite shots of the morning. Giving me this surreal other worldly feel due in most part to the long exposure (using a 6 stop ND filter)
The Other Realm
For this shot I’ve gone for the full filter Quaddie
Kase Filters Magnetic CPL stacked with three Wolverine glass filters – the 6 Stop ND64, the 3 stop (0.9) Reverse Grad and the 3 stop (0.9) Soft Grad. So for perhaps the first time I’m using the Kase magnetic CPL plus all three slots on the Kase K9 filter holder (with 2mm filters)
With the shot at 14mm, and as you can see there is no vignetting caused by the holder or filters. For example take a look at the bottom right corner of the frame (this image is not cropped). It’s still early days, but I’m very happy with the performance of this filter holder and the filter holder so far
Motherlode

Just refining the composition on this water surrounded rock… hoping I’ll hit the motherlode… I wanted to exclude the merge that was happening with the left top point of the rock which was overlapping with the main rockshelf on the left. By moving my tripod a bit to the left and raising the height a bit I was able to get the separation I wanted. Now you get to see the white rushing water all the way around the rock
Motherlode
By this time the sun was fully showing between the layers of cloud. So we get some more direct golden glow and a nice starburst

Surrounded

I was liking this huge boulder which was surrounded by this channel which went right around it. When a good wave came in the water fully rushes in around both sides of the rock. If you time things right you get the water drawing back out around both sides for this completely surrounded look

Another aspect to the timing is waiting for the rising sun to be somewhat blocked by some cloud so it doesn’t blow out that part of the frame. Though the Kase Filters 3 stop (0.9) Reverse Grad helps in that regard since the darkest part of the filter is right there just above the horizon over where the sun is

I saw Gerry shooting around the area of this nice channel earlier on when I was focusing on the rock pools, potholes and that small channel leading straight towards sunrise. We kinda wordlessly swapped positions around the same time so here’s my take on this
This is right on sunrise (5:49AM) – which is in the process of happening just off to the right of this frame

Thread the Needle

Checking out this nice little channel with the waves threading the needle and breaking right through
There’s really not much to this and I liked the simplicity of this one
