Akrotiri

Today we drove to the other end of the island of Santorini to visit the ancient ruins of Akrotiri

Similarly to the famous city of Pompei this small Cycladic Bronze Age settlement was buried by a volcanic eruption

Unlike Pompei however the people here had warning to evacuate (a series of sever earthquakes) so the people managed to escape but it preserved the remains of fine frescoes and many objects and artworks

Another difference to Pompei (which was buried in the year 79AD), Akrotiri was thousands of years older being buried around 1600 BC and the settlement itself dates back to around 4 to 5000BC

The settlement has a number of notable features – it had an elaborate drainage system, and was made up of sophisticated multi-storey buildings that were decorated with exquisite wall-paintings
